Welcome to 60 Top Hat Piano Grooves Vol. 1
Introductory Lesson. Course Content and Prerequisites.

Before you start with these lessons I would like to briefly explain the prerequisites needed to take full advantage of this course.
All grooves in this volume are based on just a few simple and often-used concepts, which are used repeatedly throughout the course.

MUSIC NOTATION
You should know how to read standard notation and chord symbols, standard Notation includes: notes, dynamics, articulations, etc. Also, you should understand the concepts of harmonic progressions, the grand staff, key signatures and time signatures.
There will be rhythms involving rests, eighth-notes, sixteenths. Sometimes the groove will ask for a shuffled eighth-note feeling.

HARMONY
A basic knowledge of harmony is required.
You must know what major and minor triads are.
and basic seventh chords, such as major 7 and minor 7.
It will also help to understand scale degrees, chord tones and tensions and different type of scales.
You should know how to determine the key of the piece by looking at the key signature and some of the chords involved in the progression

CHORDS
Can you play a triad using different voicings?
Left hand voicings • Right hand voicings • with a bass on the left hand
It is not essential, but useful, to know how to play triads in any inversion, in close position or using Drop 2 voicings.
We will talk about inversions and drop twos in the next lesson and how you can practice them at the piano.

LESSON FORMAT
Every lesson in this course will include a video presentation in two parts. First we will explain the concept for the current groove and then we will show an example of the groove playing it over a specific harmonic progression.

The example is also provided as sheet music in a PDF file for you to download and practice.

That's all!
